I've done this once before to an author named David Colbert! I did it by email and he emailed me back and sent me his books along with a beautiful postcard. Not only that he checked my hometown library and found it hadn't been updated so he sent his new book there as a gift. It was so wonderful, I hope to email and write letters to other authors I come across :)
