When I was Health and Fitness Director at the Defiance YMCA, I led a 4 month challenge called, "The biggest loser." I actually had to fight to get the rights, but it brought the attention of over 350 people. I helped a lot with my staff of trainers and instructors, but I remember one client, Mike, was almost 400lbs and his goal was just to get from sitting to walking the 5k at the end of the 4 months. He did. He used the treadmill and starting lifting. He ate better and eventually lost 100lbs and walked the 5k with his family. It was one of the most rewarding experiences I've ever had.
